Who's On First?

If you know our family even a little, you know how much we love sports! All kinds, from football to basketball, some golf and even hockey and of course swimming. However, if there is one sport that stood out the most in our home it would be Baseball! From the George Brett painting in the boys room to the L.A Dodgers towel and hat hanging from the bookshelf, it's baseball...lots and lots of baseball. Andy played when he was younger and was actually very good. He says his MLB career was ended when a ground ball poped him in the face and he could never play defense the same way again. Too bad, I was looking forward to being the wife of a professional baseball player and not see my husband for 8-9 months out of the year. I digress, but truly we love America's Pasttime and so it was only natural that our boys would start to play. So, a couple of weeks ago we made the decision to sign Diego up for T-Ball which is all that is really offered for his age. Unfortunately, there is nothing offered for 2yr olds in the baseball world so JJ is struggling with being too young right now. It has been a great two weeks and we want to remember these times forever. Diego is playing for the Fishers,IN  YMCA and it is so fun to watch these young 3 and 4 yr olds figure out the rules and strategy to this fun game.

Did I mention JJ is hoping to get on the field no matter what? He did make for a good first base coach!

They practiced everything from hitting, to scooping up ground balls, to catching and running the bases! It's a great way to ensure an 8pm bedtime!! 

It was a great first day of practice! Even though I spent most of the time chasing JJ off the field and making him give the baseballs back to the coach. Poor little guy, he just wanted to play. 

Week two was just as fun but this time I decided to fly solo because I knew it was picture day and team reveal day (you find out what team you're on.) We showed up, Diego announced himself at the check-in table and we heard "Congrats, Diego! You are on the Cubs!!" Ummm...well Uncle Scott will be proud and a T-Ball Cubs team cannot do any worse than the real team so, let's do it!! 

He picked the number 15 and is excited to stick with it!

For some parents, it's straight A's on a report card. For me, it's seeing my sweet son in some sports gear. Melts my heart every time!! (Don't worry, we want to see good grades also)

            Playing first base like a pro!

As I stated before, it was also picture day during week two of practice! He has an awesome coach, Coach Matt, and the entire team gets along quite well. It was also very cold this day. The week before we had sunny and 80's while this day was cloudy, rainy and 50's. So we were on a "game time decision" with how much play we would get in on this day. It started off fine but slowly began to sprinkle when they were doing some basic warm-up drills.

Then, the rain really started to come down....hard!! All coaches called it quits and stated that everyone was excused from practice to run to their cars! Our team thought about hanging out but it was really pouring. So Diego and I grabbed our belongings and made a fast dash to the car! Turns out, we got wet anyways...

It was a great time and a little rain never hurt anyone. Our team joked that we had won the first game by default as we were the last to call it off so consequently the other teams had left the field. The kids thought this was funny and kept saying "We won by default!!" I don't even think they know what that meant but it was fun. 

Andy unfortunately has missed both practices due to work and travel but will be in attendance this week. We will see how the Cubs do at their first official game of the season. Weather will be in the 80's again so we will be ready for some serious game time!! 

And so it is, May 2014 begins our career as sports parents!! We will see where this road takes us but one thing we do know, it's ALWAYS about having fun and trying your very best!
